Several years ago, I began to discover the Maritimes, the eastern part of Canada which includes New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. Through these trips that are not finished yet, I fell in love with this part of the country where the people’s hospitality is contagious, where the sea food is comforting, where the life is simple and the mutual help is essential. And I’m not talking about the beauty of the landscape! Wow! Over time, my attention turned to the history of each of these provinces, including Acadian history that I knew very briefly compared to what it really is. Obviously, there’s the story that we learn in school and history with a big H! This History is ours.

Canada is like a book of memories as much different and substantial from each other. The history of this country belongs to the collective memory. It is part of our identity as Canadians. If you’re like me having a scientific background then the place given to Canadian history in your curriculum is quite limited. However, each province and territory has a richness about the past steeped in struggles, conflicts, discoveries and characters that have changed the course of history and, presumably, the future. To me, it’s important to be interested in it.

Incidentally, I would like to make a special mention of Aboriginal history which, I think, deserves a much better understanding because these people were here at the very beginning, long before Canada was created. You know, first nations, Inuit and Metis play a key role in the future of this country.

I think it’s important to “remember” to articulate the decisions and advancements of our Canadian society in order to assure future generations a Canada that is always proud of its diversity, who knows how to protect its freedom and who knows how to defend its collective values. History is a light from the past that is part of the dialogue of our people and a respect for the civilization of tomorrow. It is, in a way, a form of citizen consciousness that allows us to better represent the present!
